Women's Health Q & A

What does gynecology cover?

A gynecologist specializes in a woman’s reproductive system, which may sound simple enough, but it also encompasses a complex system that’s responsible for ovulation, conception, and birth. Whether or not you have children, are planning on having children, or you’ve decided against having children, your reproductive system remains the same and includes:

  • The genitals
  • Vagina
  • Uterus
  • Ovaries
  • Fallopian tubes
  • Breasts

What are the more common gynecological issues?

Because the female reproductive system is complex, several issues can affect any single component and its function. Some of the more pressing gynecological issues include, but are not limited to:

  • Menstrual and hormonal issues
  • Infertility
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Cancers, such as uterine, breast and cervical
  • Endometriosis
  • Genital tract infections
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Incontinence

Compounding issues are the different transitions you make in life, each with its own unique set of concerns, such as:

  • Puberty
  • Childbearing
  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause

As a trained gynecologist, Dr. Patterson understands the many functioning parts of your reproductive system and knows what to look for regarding risk and overall wellness.

What does a typical visit to the gynecologist cover?

A routine visit to Dr. Patterson starts by collecting the following:

  • Vitals check: heart rate, blood pressure
  • Measurements: height and weight
  • Analyses: urine and sometimes blood

Next, Dr. Patterson performs both an internal and external physical exam of your reproductive organs, which typically follows this sequence:

  • Dr. Patterson starts with a visual exam of your external genitals.
  • Using a speculum inserted into your vagina, Dr. Patterson visually checks your vagina and cervix. She may swab your cervix for a Pap smear during this examination.
  • Dr. Patterson then performs an internal bi-manual exam by placing one hand on the outside of your abdomen and two gloved fingers inside your vagina to check your uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, and ovaries.
  • If needed, Dr. Patterson performs a rectal exam.
  • Finally, Dr. Patterson checks your breasts for any abnormalities.

This thorough exam is crucial for monitoring your health and detecting issues before they become severe problems. It's also a convenient time to discuss your concerns, goals, and needs with Dr. Patterson. Whether it’s discussing birth control, sexual issues, or menopause, Dr. Patterson helps ensure your quality of life through every stage of your journey through womanhood.
